March 24 & 25

“Great Expectations,” one of the most popular Charles Dickens classics comes to life on the big screen making theater history from London’s Vaudeville Theater.  Since its original publication 150 years ago, “Great Expectations,” has been portrayed in film, TV and musicals, but this is the first full-length play from London’s West End.

Written by one of the greatest and most prolific writers, this top-notch performance of “Great Expectations” celebrates Dickens’ epic storytelling and larger than life characters in the first ever stage adaptation in London.

The lavish and spectacular theatrical show brings some of the most memorable characters ever created to life.  Pip, the orphan and the film’s protagonist, the beautiful, chilling Estella, the terrifying convict Magwitch, who changes Pip’s life, the manipulative lawyer Jaggers, and the tragic, mysterious Miss Havisham, the wealthy spinster who lives a life of seclusion following the loss of her love.

This top-notch performance of “Great Expectations” provides a dramatic portrayal of Pip’s growth and personal development.  Pip, with his ‘great expectations,’ feels guilt for a crime he committed at an early age and lives in fear of being arrested.  In addition to crime, the film also depicts ambition, social class and the importance of social advancement in the class system of Victorian England.

Audiences will become completely immersed in the intensity of the characters’ affection, loyalty and conscience.  Although Pip is an idealist, his desire for self-improvement and his ambitions for advancement in life motivate him to have “great expectations” about his future.  In true Dickens’s style, Great Expectations’ classic characters reflect the events of the time in this outstanding and evocative production.  See it at Digiplex Theaters March 24 and 25th!

2013 Oscar Shorts: Documentary February 10

                  Oscar Shorts: Documentary
February 10

This year’s short documentary films nominated for the Oscars are overflowing with compelling stories of loss, isolation, struggle and hope in the 2013 Oscar Shorts: Documentary.

As a tribute to women undergoing chemotherapy, sisters Cynthia and Rachel open their beauty salon free of charge once a month in “Mondays at Racine.”  The film portrays the painful toll of cancer and captures the invaluable emotional support the women receive as they rediscover their beauty at the salon, asking the question, “When your life is at stake, why is losing your hair so hard?”

“Inocente” is the inspirational story of a charismatic homeless 15-year immigrant who is an aspiring artist.  With maturity that belies her age and circumstances, she tells her story directly into the camera determined to prove herself and succeed despite her bleak situation.

Watch over the course of a decade, as five senior citizens in a Florida retirement community find themselves struggling with isolation, illness and loss in “King’s Point.”  “Gertie, could you fall in love again?...” asks one of the seniors as another laments, “its no good to be alone.”

“Redemption” looks into the hidden lives behind the streets of New York City ‘canners' who survive collecting cans and bottles from recycling bins and trash and redeem them for money.

“Open Heart” is a somber look into the journey of Rwandan children with serious heart disease who travel to Sudan for treatment.  An important human rights documentary, the film portrays the dire circumstances these children face against all odds.

In addition to the poignant and gripping 2013 Oscar Shorts: Documentary films, Digiplex will also feature the exciting line-up of 2013 Oscar Shorts: Animated and Live Action Films on February 8 and 9th.

The Sleeping Beauty January 13 & 15

The Sleeping Beauty
Royal Ballet
January 13 & 15

If you love classical ballet complete with fairy tale themes, lavish decors, and stunning choreography, The Sleeping Beauty will captivate you.  A Fairytale ballet with a Tchaikovsky score that has delighted audiences for over a hundred years, The Sleeping Beauty is the pinnacle of classical ballet with Petipa's choreography.

Based on the original fairy tale by Charles Perrault, The Sleeping Beauty first premiered at the Imperial Mariinsky Theater in St Petersburg in 1890 and is Tchaikovsky's longest ballet.     Starring Lauren Cuthbertson & Sergei Polunin, today’s Sleeping Beauty not only captures the essence of the original but is also the cornerstone of The Royal Ballet's repertoire.

Featuring every step in the ballet syllabus and probably the greatest ballerina role in Aurora, The Sleeping Beauty is rich in many different ballet styles choreographically.  Its authentic court dances, classical ballet technique, mimed scenes and grand processions represent the best of classical ballet.
The Sleeping Beauty
Complete with a handsome prince, a beautiful princess and a magical kiss, The Sleeping Beauty tells the story of Princess Aurora whom the evil fairy Carabosse curses.
Angry at not being invited to baby Aurora’s christening, Carabosse curses the princess to die when she pricks her finger. Luckily a  good fairy intervenes, leaving Aurora to sleep for 100 years only to be awoken by the kiss of a handsome, brave prince.
Though mainly thought of as a love story, The Sleeping Beauty is also a struggle between the two conflicting forces of good and evil, represented by the good Lilac Fairy and the evil fairy Carabosse.
From Petipa's 1890 original to De Valois' 1946 production, The Sleeping Beauty is viewed as a definitive statement and inspiration for the next generation of choreographers.

Ideal for classical music fans that want to experience Tchaikovsky’s vision of the story, young budding ballerinas looking for inspiration, and even first timers, The Sleeping Beauty is a classic for all ages.

Don't miss The Sleeping Beauty at Digiplex Theaters on January 13 & 15th.

Ballet In Cinema: The Nutcracker

Ballet in Cinema: The Nutcracker
(Bolshoi Ballet)
December 16 - 20

The Nutcracker (Bolshoi Ballet)
A classic holiday tradition for many years, The Nutcracker ballet is a magical performance loved by children and adults alike.  Written during the classical period of ballet, The Nutcracker Ballet takes place in Western Europe in the 1800’s on Christmas Eve but the story is as crazy as it is convincing.

Based on the fairytale The Nutcracker and the King of Mice, The Nutcracker’s enchanting costumes and incredible setting at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater feature one of the most famous pas de deux, dance for two, in ballet.  The Nutcracker’s Sugar Plum Fairy dance with the Prince is world renown.

Slip away into the Land of Sweets with the Prince and Clara as the Sugar Plum Fairy treats them to a celebration of dances.  Clara and her prince are entertained by several dance performances in The Nutcracker that portray different nationalities.

In the Land of Sweets, each dance represents a delicacy that was unique to that part of the world.  For example, Tea was the Chinese Dance and Coffee was the Arabian Dance.  To further enhance the visual experience, each dancer’s costume resembled the “sweets” from their country.  Unlike today, foreign delicacies were very rare when the ballet was created.

The Nutcracker captures all the magic, joy and mystery of Christmas.  Better than a present, the enchanting costumes and incredible setting at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater, the Nutcracker at the Bolshoi Ballet is not to be missed this holiday season. Don’t miss this great holiday classic playing at your local Digiplex starting on Sunday Dec. 16 through Thursday, Dec. 20.
